Description

Have you been wondering how to fit the language conventions standards into your daily schedule? I have developed a plan for teaching all of the language conventions standards through writing lessons that also tie into the writing standards.

This resource addresses all of the Language Conventions Common Core State Standards through authentic writing selections that correspond to the Text Types and Purposes Common Core State Writing Standards. My hope is that our students will move towards mastery of these standards by enjoying a variety of 50 simple writing selections with embedded language standards, rather than relying solely on the use of practice sheets, workbooks, etc…. By using these prompts and sentence stems, students will automatically be engaged in the language standards. You may also wish to directly teach the language standards via mini-lessons or additional examples right alongside of these writing pieces.

Please see the sample preview file for a visual explanation of what is included. To summarize, the resource provides you with 50 writing planning sheets with 50 writing frames to match on a variety of topics – everywhere from living things to being a good listener to our friends’ favorite recess activities. The writing planning sheets are meant to be printed and distributed to students to help them gather ideas before writing. Students will keep these and refer to them throughout the writing process. (I generally take one week for each writing topic.) The writing frames are the next step. These frames are set in a sentence-stem format for students to complete in their own unique ways. The frames include highlighted areas that address the Common Core Language Convention standards, along with a notation of the specific standards addressed listed on the bottom of each frame sheet. I prefer to display the frames digitally and have the students copy and complete the writing selections in their journals. However, they can also be printed for students to complete without having to write the entire selection.

Included you will also find a correlation chart showing how each of the 50 writing selections meet the language convention and text types and purposes standards.

Additionally, you will find a 5-day instructional routine that you may wish to incorporate for each selection. Both of these can be found in the preview sample file as well.
