These combining like terms math color by number worksheets and digital version have you covered with both print and digital options!

  • Students solve 20 (or 15) problems, self-check, AND color in both versions.
  • AND coloring in math has been shown to help reluctant students feel more comfortable with math!

Check out the Preview above to see how the Google Slides version works (students will need to know how to use the "Fill color" feature).

These problems require students to:

  • Combine the like terms by adding and subtracting
  • Terms include different variables (with coefficients), variables with exponents, whole numbers
  • Find the simplified expressions on the coloring page/section

This easy-prep combining like terms color by number activity includes:

1) Two Print versions

  • Version A:
    • Problem sheet with 20 expressions
    • Coloring sheet
  • Version B:
    • Problem sheet with 15 questions (different from Version A)
    • Coloring sheet – less detailed than Version A

2) Google Slides version:

  • Same 15 problems and mostly same colors as print Version B
  • Students type their answers in the answer box
  • Students use the ‘Fill color’ bucket to color the shapes
  • Questions are not editable (they are in the background) but the shapes and numbers in the pattern ARE movable.

3) Two coloring pages with no numbers, so students can color the pattern their own way, for fun:-)

What teachers are saying about this combining like terms color by number activity:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "The students were able to jump right into it, thus allowing me to assist those students who needed a little extra help. This is great assignment if you want to keep students moving forward with the concept, but also need some time to slow it down for those still grasping the concept."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Great resource I utilized when we had extra time at the end of class and during my intervention period with students who needed additional practice with these specific skills. My students really enjoyed this activity!”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"My students enjoyed this resource as review of how to combine like terms! They enjoyed the coloring part as well. I also like it is good way for students to check their work as they go."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This was perfect! I've used paper versions before but this was just as easy and fun to see the variations of the shades of the colors the students used. Great way for them to check their answers without a google form."

Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + 𝘹) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3𝘹; apply the distributive property to the expression 24𝘹 + 18𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4𝘹 + 3𝘺); apply properties of operations to 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 to produce the equivalent expression 3𝘺.
Identify when two expressions are equivalent (i.e., when the two expressions name the same number regardless of which value is substituted into them). For example, the expressions 𝘺 + 𝘺 + 𝘺 and 3𝘺 are equivalent because they name the same number regardless of which number 𝘺 stands for.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
