Almost everyone has heard of Cinderella. Maybe you’ve read the Brothers Grimm version from 1800’s Germany, or even farther back to the late 1600’s with Charles Perrault‘s version. Cinderella stories are not solely a Western European construct, but rather pop up all around the globe in more than 500 cultural versions, from China to Ireland, Indonesia to Appalachia. And why is this theme so popular? Most likely because we all want to see good rewarded and evil punished.
Cinderella stories are familiar for kids, and they enjoy seeing the twists and turns and differences present in the different stories. In this unit, the kids have fun comparing and contrasting multicultural literature in engaging activities.
This unit is designed to be a 2 week ELA/Social Studies unit. Teachers will need to have the following 5 Cinderella Around the World books that they will read with their class. In the guide, I have included information and symbolism from the different cultures, and video links to read-alouds in case your library does not have one of the books.
The Turkey Girl, retold by Penny Pollock. (Zuni Pueblo, US)
Yeh-Shen: A Cinderella Story from China, by Ai-Ling Louie. (Ancient China)
