What educators are saying

Great resource to use going into break. The kids learned new things about celebrations in other countries.
My students loved this project and loved all the background information about Christmas in Mexico even more! Worth every single penny!

Description

Christmas in Mexico! Lesson + Learning Stations is a look at the festive Christmas season in Mexico. Celebrations for Las Posadas, Noche Buena (Christmas Eve), and Dia de Los Reyes (Three Kings Day) are all covered in a fun, comprehensive lesson with accompanying authentic images and videos. As part of the festivities, students will make two easy crafts: a Christmas star piñata ornament that encompasses the symbolism of the piñata, and a Farolito luminaire that is introduced during the Christmas decorations section.

This lesson has been split into two parts.

Part 1: Christmas in Mexico! Direct Instruction Lesson is a way for you to introduce students to the history and celebrations of Christmas in Mexico. You can present this lesson the day before students rotate through stations. It includes a lesson file, images to show as you teach the lesson, and instructions to make a fun, easy pinata star ornament.

For part 1, a printable for the pinata craft is included. There is a little prep to do for the craft, but it is easy.

Part 2: Christmas in Mexico Learning Stations can be presented the following day. There are 5 stations that you will set up in the classroom for students to rotate through. They are:

  • Mapping Mexico
  • Christmas Decorations - Farolito (craft)
  • Christmas Decorations - The Poinsettia
  • The Legend of the Poinsettia (reading and reflection)
  • La Navidad Celebrations

For part 2, we have included everything you need to set these stations up. This includes an overview of the learning stations, templates to print out (and even laminate) to display at each station, Farolito craft instructions, a printable for the Farolito craft candle, a mini booklet printable, and a teacher's key for the mini booklet printable.

For part 2, there is no prep.

TESTIMONIALS ABOUT OUR PRODUCTS

"In my nearly 30-year career in education, I have never seen children so engaged in their learning! International Travel Academy is truly a multi-disciplinary approach that enables children to explore the world in an unforgettable way. Students get a real sense of what it means to respect another country's heritage, beliefs and ways of living, thus making them more tolerant and internationally-minded. I highly recommend this program to educators and parents wishing to make learning come to life!"

“(The five-day program) has given our school the unique opportunity to provide students with incredible experiences that align so well with our IB focus. Each spring with family and community support, our school essentially is transformed into our country of study for one full week. Teachers are easily able to follow the daily curriculum and activities provided, and the students truly enjoy this special week of instruction. From the art projects to festive food tastings, cultural dress, music, dance and traditions, the students spend this entire week engaged in new and exciting experiences of a new country. I would encourage all schools (IB, or not) to jump in and make a week like this happen for their students. It is incredibly gratifying to spend this week with kids as they come together to learn and share experiences like these across grade levels, school-wide. When we hear such rich discussion in classrooms and read their detailed writing about what they've learned as part of (the) week, it makes all the preparation, planning and expense totally worth it!! “
