Choose a Prompt; Write a Story & Illustrate in Word
- Zip
Description
In the Choose a Prompt; Write a Story & Illustrate in Word activity, students choose from 4 prompts, write a story in Word, and illustrate their story, using an image they draw in Paint, a Microsoft Online Pictures image, or a Google image. This resource focuses on formatting a story with an image.
I find that most of my students have heard the word format but don't really understand what it means. I’m a secondary teacher so we aren’t talking about 4th graders, but middle and high schoolers!
Adding to the formatting challenge, many students don’t want to write. Providing prompts helps and most students also enjoy working with images.
The four story prompts are:
1. I heard a sound.
2. Five years from now, I will …….
3. Should students who are your age receive an allowance? Why or why not?
4. Clown Picture Prompt
This resource is differentiated for all students and includes:
· written directions with formatting help for students
· 2 example stories with images, including one for Low Literacy and/or beginner
English Language Learners
· editable rubric and student directions if you want to make changes
· 4 Screencast help videos
· How to Use and other help for the teacher
With the Story Prompts resource, students learn to:
· Add a bolded and centered story title in Word Art or an appropriate font
· Double space
· Indent paragraphs
· Insert a 3-column footer
· Insert an image into a Word document, either from Paint or Creative Commons from Microsoft Online Pictures or Google Images.
The videos walk students through formatting their documents, saving a Paint image, inserting images, how to find Creative Commons images in Online Pictures or Google Images, and cropping images.
I’ve included editable Student Directions and an an editable rubric to give you more flexibility. There’s also basic directions on how to edit if you want to limit the illustration options with your students.
My students usually spend 1-2 classes on this activity.
This activity can be used for Distance Learning or in the classroom. Just post the materials to your LMS and you’re set!
This is one of 5 Story Prompt Resources. Use one resource for students to learn story formatting and a second as a story assessment.
