Description

Why choice books?
The best way to get students to become life-long readers is to give them a chance to discover books that they connect with and enjoy. Using these choice book materials in your classroom makes it easy to introduce the concept of choosing books to read in addition to whatever is being studied in the English/Language Arts classroom, as it can be done as much in class or out of class as you’d like. This is very flexible and is being sold in Word document format so that you can edit individual items to suit your needs. Also, including a choice book reading component to your classroom is a great way to differentiate learning for students depending on individual reading/lexile levels. Included elements also incorporate common core standards and lend themselves well to all literacy/reading objectives. For teachers trying to include a reading element in your non-ELA content area classroom to support common core literacy requirements, this resource will be a HUGE help as everything is already done for you.

What’s included in this?
-A choice book reading log for students to keep track of reading, which can be assigned as weekly homework or used less formally.
-FOUR choice book questionnaire assignments to use in class or as homework – use these to assess student reading, ensure that students actually ARE reading, and provoke discussion about books in your classroom.
-A choice book update form to pass around in class as often as you wish, with places for students to write their names, book titles, and current page numbers. This is an easy way to do a quick check of student progress.
-A choice book information sheet assignment, which is helpful to for when students finish a book on their own.
-A choice book project consisting of creative options as well as a written, more formal book report form.
-A rubric to use for assessing the creative book reports, including a space for students to self-evaluate in addition to the teacher evaluation space.
-A peer evaluation tool for mini presentations to individual peers. This is a great way to have students present their material to a small audience and also hear about books other students have read. It often leads to new ideas for what books to read next and provides a structured way for students to recommend books to peers.
