According to research, watching native video is an effective way to learn a new language and culture. Furthermore, students are motivated to learn so they can better enjoy the story.
Growing Pains is a popular Chinese teen drama series. The setting and story are very relatable for students and provides insight into what Chinese high school life is like. The story focuses on four teenagers’ lives, showing their joys and struggles with family and friendship. The series is very funny and engaging to watch.
The included listening comprehension sheet will help students focus on details. Each question includes a timestamp to indicate when in the episode they can find the answer.
The writing section includes open-ended questions to prompt students to think deeper about Chinese culture and how it differs from western cultures.
The first nine episodes are covered, providing a chance to get to know the characters and their day-to-day experiences as high school students, as well as Episode 40, where the students take their college entrance exams.
