What educators are saying

I used this resource with my general science students and found it very helpful. Balancing chemical reactions can be a daunting task and this handout explains it in a way that students are able to understand. The included practice work is also great.
Great review for my students. Easy to use and a great tool to have with the lesson. Students found it challenging yet learned a lot from it.

Description

This is a complete lesson for students to learn about chemical reactions and balancing chemical equations.

Students will: learn how the Law of Conservation of Mass relates to balancing chemical equations; identify evidence for chemical reactions; be able to count the number of moles and atoms in a chemical formula; be able to balance chemical equations; identify the types of chemical reactions such as synthesis, decomposition, combustion, single-replacement, double-replacement.

A 39-slide power point slide show presents this information in a clear, engaging step-by-step manner. A 3-page guided notes handout is provided for students to complete as they follow along with the slide show.

Student practice sheets allow students to apply their knowledge of counting atoms, balancing equations, and identifying types of reactions.

A quiz is provided to assess your students' knowledge of chemical reactions - 8 equations to balance and identify, 4 more questions to assess their knowledge of atoms in formulas and identifying evidence of chemical reactions.

This download includes:

- 39-slide power point presentation detailing chemical reactions and

balancing chemical reactions

- 3-page handout of guided notes for students to complete as they

follow along with the slide show

- Types of Chemical Reactions reference page

- Types of Chemical Reactions student guided note page

- Types of Chemical Reactions practice page

- Counting Moles and Atoms in Chemical Formulas student practice page

- How To Balance Chemical Equations instruction page

- Balancing Chemical Equations student practice sheet

- Quiz - 12 questions covering chemical reactions, balancing chemical equations, identifying types of chemical reactions, and evidence for chemical reactions

- All answer keys

- Teacher notes and suggestions for the lesson

This lesson will take approximately 3 class periods and is appropriate for middle school and high school chemistry.
