Learning Objective

After reading each script, students will identify character traits for the main characters, and support their answer with evidence from the text. Students will improve their reading fluency.

Description

Do your students enjoy reading scripts? Could they benefit from practice activities where they are required to identify character traits as they read? This set of six partner plays is perfect for students who would benefit from targeted activities that work toward building reading fluency and inferring character traits. These six partner plays are intended to be used as fluency-building activities that 4th and 5th grade students can do with a partner.

This file includes a BONUS reading comprehension worksheet. After reading each script, students use text clues to infer character traits for the main characters in each script. They write the words on a supplemental worksheet, citing evidence from the text to support their answers. Two word bank posters are included. Students with a limited vocabulary might benefit from these posters that will allows you to scaffold your students at their present level. One word bank contains twenty character trait vocabulary words. The other word bank contains those same twenty vocabulary words and definitions for each.

These scripts require minimal teacher support, thereby allowing teachers to work with other small groups. For teachers who implement reading centers, these plays are perfect. These scripts are also ideal for parents who are looking for fun at-home reading activities that parents and children can read together. If you have a child who is reluctant to read at home, I encourage you to give these scripts a try!

This resource is available in multiple formats. Each teacher gets to choose the format that best meets his/her students' needs. You will choose between the printable partner plays and the paperless version that uses Google Slides. If you choose the printable option, you will have access to versions with color clip art and blackline clip art. Each script is exactly two pages, making it easy to print them back-to-back on a single page.

This set includes six independent scripts and the following character traits:

  • Beloved Dexter (considerate, insensitive)
  • The Big Win (arrogant, humble)
  • Uncle Adam's Escapades (adventurous)
  • A Date with Danica (undependable, caring)
  • Who Will Ask the Question? (assertive, anxious)
  • Partner Work (honest, deceitful)
