Changes to Ecosystems & Invasive Species | 5th Grade Animal Research Project

How do invasive species impact and change ecosystems? Explore abiotic and biotic components of ecosystems and changes to ecosystems due to humans and animals.

Students research an invasive species using the provided materials and the internet, collect information, and then create a mini-poster. Vocabulary cards, a notebook template, a quiz, and an open-response prompt are included.

An example project photo, fact sheets for 3 species, research guide keys, teacher directions, and quiz + open response answer keys are provided.

Includes 5 days of 45-minute lessons:

• Introduction: Invasive species videos and vocabulary

• Research Guide: Use a fact sheet and the internet to collect information about an invasive species (nutria, cane toad, Burmese python)

• Make a Poster: Use the completed research guide to make mini-posters about an invasive species

• Share and notebook: Students share mini-posters, take notes about other invasive species, and write a Class CER.

• Assess: 5-question multiple choice quiz and differentiated open response prompt including Google Forms option
