    Description

Engage your students with this selection of fun and no- to low-prep activities on cell organelles that have them practice their skills and knowledge of identifying structures in cells and their function. This bundle contains two resources: an active, printable around-the-room scavenger hunt that also includes a version for Google Forms™, and a fun digital escape room for Google Sheets™.

    Prior knowledge/skills required:

To get most out of these activities, students should be able to identify the following cell organelles / structures from diagrams, definitions or analogies, as well as being able to tell the difference between animal and plant cells:

    • nucleus
    • Golgi apparatus
    • cytoplasm
    • vacuole
    • cell membrane
    • cell wall
    • mitochondria
    • ribosome
    • endoplasmic reticulum
    • chloroplast
    • lysosome

    Standards:

Cell Organelles Digital Escape Room Activity

This is an engaging and self-checking, no-prep task that helps your students review recognizing structures within plant and and animal cells, and their functions.

The Google Sheet™ activity is self-checking. Correct answers open the locks. Once all three locks in a row have been opened, the next three questions are revealed. Opening the last row of locks will reveal a final riddle in form of a word scramble that students have to solve to complete the escape room.

Twelve questions are included in this resource. The resource uses Google Sheets™ and comes with a write-in (students type their answers into the answer boxes) and a drop-down option (students select their answers from a list of available answers). An answer key is provided. Printable and digital recording sheets are also included to help your students keep track.

    *** IMPORTANT ***

Please ensure that your district allows the use of Google Sheets™. If you have not created a free Google account, you will need to do so before using this activity. To use the resource as intended, your students will also need their own Google account. This resource will not work in Excel.

If assigning the activity on Google Classroom, make sure you select ‘make a copy for each student’. If you are using a different platform, please ensure that students are working on their own copy of the activity.

    NGSSMS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall. Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.
    NGSSMS-LS1-1
Conduct an investigation to provide evidence that living things are made of cells; either one cell or many different numbers and types of cells. Emphasis is on developing evidence that living things are made of cells, distinguishing between living and non-living cells, and understanding that living things may be made of one cell or many and varied cells.
