Description

The island of Antigua lies approximately 450 miles north of Trinidad, a distance that was all but unfathomable to slaves during colonial times. Yet despite their physical separation, these enslaved populations and the unique musical cultures they created would evolve to be remarkably similar. Calypso Music is perhaps the best example of this.

'Carnival & Calypso in Antigua 'is an 850-word journal-style essay that features interviews with Antiguan media personalities and music historians. Paying special attention to the island's adoption of Calypso from Trinidad, this instalment encourages students to understand assimilation as a process – one that continues throughout the Caribbean today. Every packet includes photos of the island's annual Carnival parade, as well as the following materials:

---Vocabulary List

---Reading Comprehension Quiz

---‘Cheat Sheet’ Comparison Grid and Fill in the Blank Worksheet

'Destination: Caribbean' is a documentary and seven-part essay series that follow one Musicologist's journey into Caribbean History. All academic materials are in English. Appropriate for all ages, though subject matter is best suited for Grades 6 and up***
