Description

There are several activities for this assignment and you can choose to do them in whichever order you choose.

Activity 1: View the film and answer the comprehension questions and discussion questions

Activity 2: Read the excerpt from "Captain Marvel's Real Origin is Feminist" which has been shortened (and made a little less controversial) for students to read and comprehend. This article introduces students to the Women's Rights Movement of the 1970s and the types of rights they were fighting for (any mention of abortion has been removed as it is a highly controversial topic - if you wish to include it you can copy the article from the link provided in this paragraph). Students will answer and discuss questions on the importance of a character like Captain Marvel during this time in women's history.

Activity 3: Students will conduct a preview of two ads (of their choosing) from the 50s-60s in the extended article "26 Sexist Ads Of The 'Mad Men' Era That Companies Wish We'd Forget". There are several ads to choose from. When they have found two they will analyze it using the chart provided and discuss the effects of ads like these. Then students will take a product ad they viewed and create a new one to be free from (gender, race, sexuality, religious, etc.) bias.

Activity 4: Students will analyze the 90s song "Just a Girl" by No Doubt and why the director chose to use this at the most heightened point in the movie. Students will also use their practice in analyzing poetry as they read this song.

This comes in both an editable PPT document and PDF.
