Description
If my years of teaching have taught me anything, it’s that you can teach your kids musical concepts using any theme; the key is finding one that grabs their attention–and what is more exciting to little kids than CANDY? So, in keeping with that, I created this, no-prep, rhythm matching game for Google Slides completely centered all around candy that reinforces quarter & eighth notes + quarter rest.
This works well all year round, but can be extra fun around Halloween time (and is a good alternative if your school doesn’t allow you to celebrate). With three sets of rhythms per slide, students must match the candy name to its correct rhythm. This activity is guaranteed to hook your students in and will likely lead to some great debates about favorite candies.
The game can be played as a whole class or in small groups (you can easily share the presentation on Google Classroom and have students work on individual devices). It's also an excellent way to assess your students' skills without their awareness and a great option to keep for emergencies in your sub-tub. Just share with the substitute (no musical knowledge is needed) and you've got yourself an easy activity for them to implement.
You could easily extend the lesson by having students perform the rhythms on classroom instruments (Orff, non-pitched percussion, recorder, ukulele, etc.).
It also segues beautifully into my Candy Composition packet and would be the perfect way to introduce/review the rhythms before stepping it up with some composing!.
This Google Slides game includes:
- 16 different slides with popular candy names--students must match the name to the correct rhythms using quarter and eighth notes + quarter rest
- A correct answer slide that says: “Well Done! Keep up the great work and try some more candy!!”
- An incorrect answer slide that says: “Snap! Keep on trying!”
- Simple and clear instructions
