Description
Have you been wanting to do a sketchbook with your students but aren't sure how? Want to cover the First Nations and Indigenous perspective in all subjects? This sketchbook activity is for you!
This features what is known as the "Indian Group of 7" and will help students understand their struggles and perspectives as well as their art.
This series of artists are what I do with my own students to improve their overall art and art history knowledge. I also include in their sketchbooks the elements and principles of design such as line and balance. For these anchor charts check out my art for the year.
Students will research and attempt a piece on each different artist after they learn about them, and include this in their sketchbooks. Projects for the pieces are not included in this activity nor is the research as it will vary depending on your grade level and student ability level.
Artists featured are:
Daphne Odjig
Alex Janvier
Jackson Beardy
Eddy Cobiness
Norval Morisseau
Carl Ray
Joseph Sanchez
I have recently added student examples to the Morrisseau sketchbook as well as my critiques of each student piece to help guide your examples. I will be adding the other sketchbooks as soon as I have time this year.
