Looking for a quick way to teach students about Canadian heroes? Look no further than the Canadian Heroes: Terry Fox Activity Packet. The purpose of this packet is to explore the contributions of Canadian Heroes to Canada as a country, and the world. This specific packet takes a look at Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope. Students explore and identify the reasons why Terry Fox is considered to be a significant Canadian, and a Canadian hero.
The curricular area of focus for this product is Language Arts.With this packet, students work on the following areas:
- Oral communication – sharing and discussing thoughts and ideas with a partner, small group, and even whole class environments.
- Reading – reading for meaning and with the purpose of researching and gathering facts to help them comprehend information about a given individual.
- Writing – write using a variety of formats (sentences, point form, mind map, quick thoughts) to help communicate understanding about a specific topic.
What is Included in the Product:
This product contains the following activities and readings to help students to learn and discover the contributions of Terry Fox:
- “The Life of Terry Fox” Reading: This reading is 3 pages in length and contains a few images, with definitions of terms that students may not be familiar with. Headings are included as well to help students keep track of learnings.
- “The Contributions of Terry Fox” Reading: This reading is 1 page in length and contains a few important facts about the contributions that Terry Fox made to cancer research, and why he is considered to be a Canadian Hero.
- Organizers and Activity Pages: Several versions of organizers are included to help students follow along with the reading, as well as giving students the option of researching information about Terry Fox on their own. There are 13 activity pages included in this packet.
- Quotation Posters: There are half-paged quotation posters that can be used to stem discussion, and inspire students.
