What educators are saying

My students had requested that they learn more about black history in Canada (as we had briefly covered the topic in social studies) and I found this resource to be excellent.

Description

Canada’s Black History: Achievers 17 Graphic Organizers was designed for use by Social Studies/History teachers - while it is a great resource for Black History Month, it can be used at any time during the school year.

The organizers are designed for students to do general research on each person. They will need access to the Internet in most cases and may find some books helpful. Students should be able to find everything they need from www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca but there is no reason they cannot use other sources as well! I have included a list of suggested websites but it is by no means comprehensive - there are many more websites about most of the subjects and you as a classroom teacher, might be fine with students using Wikipedia.

The organizers can be used as a group activity (or one could be assigned to each student), or could be completed as an independent study. Students may pick and choose, or be assigned subjects by you. One organizer can be used to begin a larger project. Completed organizers can be displayed on a bulletin board.

Answer keys are included for the factual portions of the graphic organizers.

I chose the 17 subjects from a variety of fields and I hope the representation is fair, if not complete! The fields include at least one of the following: writing, the military, politics, activism, music, sports and invention. Some of the achievers are born and have or had always lived in Canada, others (e.g. Harriet Tubman, Mary Ann Shadd) lived in Canada briefly but made a great contribution to black history overall. A number of achievers were born outside Canada but moved here, either to escape slavery, came with their families as children, or to seek a new opportunities. The complete list of subjects includes:

Damian Warner*, Donovan Bailey, Drake, Elijah McCoy, Harriet Tubman, Harry Jerome, Jarome Iginla, Jean Augustine, Josiah Henson, Lawrence Hill, Lincoln Alexander, Mary Ann Shadd, Michaelle Jean, Perdita Felicien, Portia White, Viola Desmond, William Hall.

There is also an unnumbered blank template so that students can make organizers for other achievers.

*Please note that on the Easel version of this resource, Damian Warner's page is at the very end. The index does not include Damian either.

I have several other resources in my store about Canada's Black History. They include:

Black Canadian History Reading Texts and Activities

Beyond the Underground Railway

Josiah Henson Reading Writing Researching
