What educators are saying

I love to use this resource as flash cards and an independent work station. The pictures are easy to understand and the words are clearly printer. There is also a master list for ease of sorting. I have print these in many different sizes to use for different activities and they print well.
We used this for the 100th day of school. We read 100 words and matched the word to the picture on bulletin board paper. We also used them to play memory, go fish, and a read-illustrate center. These are perfect for SO MANY tasks!

Description

Learning to easily read CVC words is an important part of the reading process as it enable our students to quickly see the 'chunks' in bigger words, which in turn aids them in the decoding process. In this cvc short vowel picture to word matching activity is based on your students matching a picture card with the correct word card.

The pack uses the short cvc vowel words (a, e, i, o, u). By reading the word without an attached picture prompt your students are encouraged to decode and blend the sounds to read the word before finding the correct picture. You can choose to provide them with one sound goup (e.g. 'at'), all the word families for a vowel or a mix of sounds.

The pack includes the short vowel word families:

  • ab, ad, ag, am, an, ap, at
  • ed, eg, en, et, em, eb
  • ib, id, ig, in, ip, it, ix
  • ob, od, og, op, ot, ox
  • ub, ug, um, un, up, us, ut, ux

As a guide for both your students and for easy organisation each word family (both pictures and words) has it's own colored frame.

There are a couple of ways to use the cvc cards:

  • 1. Choose what you want your students to work on (e.g. a sound group, vowel group or a mix). Place the picture cards face up on the table and have the words cards in a pile. Go through the picture cards with your students first to ensure they know what each picture represents (e.g. the hog card could also be a pig so they need to know the different words). First student picks a word card off the pile, they sound out/read the word, then find the picture that matches the word.
  • 2. As a memory game: Choose the word/sound cvc cards you want your students working on. Mix the cards up and place them face down on the table. Students take turns at flipping over two cards to find the match of picture and word cards.
