Description

Interactive, no prep activity where students will create 8 separate FOREST food chains using their digital devices to drag and drop the plants or animals into the food chain sequences. Discuss the movement of matter and energy among plants, animals, decomposers and the environment.

Depending on the age group, you may or may not want to show them the reference page telling which animals eat which organisms. Some of the food chains have four links and some of them have three. All of the animals and plants needed for those are on the bottom of each of the pages.

Once the students have completed their food chains the discussion of producers, consumers and top consumers can take place. I have included a chart for them to organize the 19 organisms.

Included in this resource:

  • Teacher Notes
  • Food Chains Included
  • 4 Drag and Drop Food Chains
  • Chart for Students to Classify the Organisms into Producers, 1st Consumers, 2nd Consumers and Top Consumers

This activity leads well into a discussion of food webs and I have many food web activities available in my store at science by Sinai.

NGSSMS-LS2-3
Develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among living and nonliving parts of an ecosystem. Emphasis is on describing the conservation of matter and flow of energy into and out of various ecosystems, and on defining the boundaries of the system. Assessment does not include the use of chemical reactions to describe the processes.
NGSS5-LS2-1
Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment. Emphasis is on the idea that matter that is not food (air, water, decomposed materials in soil) is changed by plants into matter that is food. Examples of systems could include organisms, ecosystems, and the Earth. Assessment does not include molecular explanations.
