    READERS' THEATER CHRISTMAS MYSTERY

This amusing Christmas Middle School Readers’ Theater brainteaser mystery script will give students practice in reading, comprehension and writing, while having lots of fun. The Mystery of the Vanishing Presents printable and Easel Activity script will entertain your students and require them to perform inference tasks to solve clues. The script is designed for 11 readers but the number of readers can easily be contracted or expanded depending on how many groups you wish to have.
    PLOT
This funny and engaging story is about two Christmas Eve thefts: one of a family's stack of presents from under the tree, and the other of an expensive breed of puppy. 12 year old twins Sloane and Sporty have to exercise their sharpest detection skills to track down the culprits and even when they do, the reasons for the thefts are not what they expect. They learn that Christmas is about so much more than presents!
    STUDENT TASKS

To track down the thieves themselves, students will have to disentangle some major clues. They will have to write out their guesses on a mystery answer sheet before the truths are revealed. To end the activity, students discuss and then write on six questions, complete a journal entry and design a ‘Spot the Difference’ style Christmas tree drawing. There is also a mix and match Christmas riddles activity, and a mix and match of funny names to appropriate books.

Question sheets and answers are included.

    CHRISTMAS DRAMA CIRCLE: RUDE ALF
Middle School students love the tale of Rudolph the hero reindeer, and they love the fun of drama circles. The two together are an unbeatable combo! In this re-telling of the famous tale they will see a rather different Rudolph than the one they know. This is the true story of Rude Alf- the rudest reindeer of them all! Students will discover the real story behind that famous nose. and why he had to lead the reindeer through the fog.

Although many of the other features of this Drama Circle are similar to other circles - each player says a line, followed by the performance of a physical action - there is a unique feature. Every fifth card out of the 40 is an EVERYONE card. A player who has drawn a card entitled EVERYONE reads out a couple of words like “OH NO!” or an action (like applauding) that the whole of the circle has to do together after a 3-2-1 GO! countdown. So much fun! As there are 40 cards in this circle, many students will have more than one card.

As you can see from the thumbnails, the cards have a Christmas themed border.

A brief, simple rubric is included if you wish to mark your students’ performances.

Three Christmas activities complete the resource. Answers are supplied.

    Table of contents

    Drama circle cards

    Drama circle rubric

    CHRISTMAS DRAMA GAME

As the winter holiday nears, Middle School drama classes become CRAAAZY! This fun Christmas board game will tether your grades 5-8 students happily to one place (the game board!) for many minutes. Because it is not just any old fun board game but a DRAMA board game, the challenges they have to do to advance to the end require their best dramatic skills. Don't worry- there's very little prep involved for you! The last thing you need is a resource that requires lots of photocopying and fiddling.

    Set-up

Minimal photocopying is needed. All that is essential is enough one page standard A4 photocopies of the board game for each group of 3-6 students. The one page student guidelines can be displayed on your screen. A paper dice is included for your students to assemble if you wish. Alternatively, you could either allow students to use a random dice generator on their devices, or raid the board games in your classroom for dice.

CHRISTMAS AND WINTER IMPROMPTU SPEAKING TOPICS
These 32 fun Christmas & Winter impromptu speech topics are real crowd pleasers for Middle School Drama classes and ELA classes. Speaking for a minute on these fun topics will channel your students' pre-holiday energy. Just print off the sheets, ask a willing student to cut them into cards, and get the students to randomly draw a topic. Give them a few minutes to prepare what they are going to say, and then let the fun begin! A small peer feedback handout is included – ‘Two terrifics and a tweak’ – so that students can give each other two points of positive feedback and one suggestion for improvement in any future public speaking opportunities. The small self evaluation form will allow students to briefly reflect upon their performance.
