What educators are saying

These have really helped with saying the letters as well as the letter sounds for my reading groups. Thanks so much!
This is an AWESOME resource. I love all of the visuals, the voice/unvoiced speakers, and the pictures of the mouth/throat are great! We use these daily in my room.

    Description

What do you mean "Trade in my Word Wall?!"

A sound wall is a classroom visual that supports students in connecting phonemes (sounds) to graphemes (written representations of sounds). Aligned with the Science of Reading research, sound walls support students in moving from speech to print, making the connection from phonemic awareness to phonics.

Rather than organizing these sounds like a traditional A-Z Word Wall, Sound Walls are organized by vowels and consonants; they display the 45 speech sounds and the graphemes that most commonly represent them. This tool is used to support students in reading and pronouncing unfamiliar words.

Sound walls are program-agnostic; use it along with any core program to enhance your instruction in foundational skills! They may take up a bit of wall space, and while this is ideal and worth every inch, the reality may be for some teachers that the wall space just isn't there. I created this portable sound wall as an alternative for teachers wanting to implement one for their students who don't have the option of a full classroom display. While this tool best aligns with standards taught through third grade, this is also a great option for intermediate students who may need this resource as part of an intervention or accommodation.

    Contents:

    • Definitions and content knowledge to help you build your confidence in teaching phonics and utilizing your sound wall
    • Placeholder cards - Spacing the cards on your Sound Wall can be tricky! These cards as meant to be used as placeholders on your bulletin board for phonemes not yet taught, so you can build the full Sound Wall and add to it as you teach new sounds! 2 versions: with and without lock icons (to "unlock" once a sound has been explicitly taught!)
    • Headers and labels for both sound walls
    • Vowel Valley description and important notes to remember
    • 18 vowel phoneme cards (double-sided to include helpful reference information (including grapheme frequency, anchor words, sound category information and articulation description, voiced/unvoiced, letter formation (lowercase only), applicable spelling rules, and placement on the vowel valley)
    • 67 individual vowel grapheme cards (including picture, anchor word, and grapheme)
    • Sample vowel valley layout and photo
    • Consonant Chart description and important notes to remember
    • 28 consonant phoneme cards (also double-sided to provide same information as above). Cards for a 2nd consonant chart layout option are included which allows you to print one articulation photo per voiced/unvoiced pairing
    • 64 individual consonant grapheme cards (including picture, anchor word, and grapheme)
    • Sample consonant chart layouts and photo
    • Alternative anchor word grapheme cards to accommodate dialect as well as international audiences
    • Links to amazing resources to learn more about this incredible tool

Please note that this is a large file. You will download a compressed .zip folder that contains two PDF documents. You will need software to open a PDF file such as Adobe Acrobat. Printing suggestions are listed within the document. You may print as many copies of the portable sound wall as needed for the students that you personally teach! Additional licenses for both documents must be purchased for use by other teachers.
