List of common Prepositions of place and movement w/ sentences and handout PDF

    Description

    Prepositions of Place

    1. Introduce prepositions of place to your students by viewing a descriptive photo and by watching a video.
    2. Click on the photo and students will learn "What exactly is a preposition of place?" This includes a brief definition and demonstrates the most common ones with explanations and example sentences.
    3. View a prepositions of place photo with your students and have them utilize it as a visual as they read sentences that pertain to each one.

    Practice

    1. Wordwall game #1: This fun and interactive game allows students to identify prepositions of place by viewing a photo and selecting the correct answer within multiple choices.
    2. Wordwall game #2: This is also a fun and interactive multiple-choice game for students to further increase their knowledge and understanding of the prepositions of place.

    Implementation of Wordwall Games:

(The first game I usually put up on the projector and the students will collaborate as a whole class interactive activity)

(For the second Wordwall game I have students pair up and play the game through Google Classroom or WhatsApp you have the means, to allow them to learn the prepositions of place with more independence)

    3. ISLCollective Video: This particular video is the trailer of the Disney Pixar movie "Coco". This video has intermittent questions that will provide students with opportunities to watch the actions and fill in the blanks in the sentences with the correct prepositions of place.

    4. Worksheet: Students will view photos and select the correct prepositions of place. I have included this activity in a PDF so you may use it as a handout for your students. They may engage in this activity, individually, within pairs, or in collaborative learning groups. As a review, students may provide you with the answers.

    Application:

    1. Scavenger Hunt:

This is where students work in pairs and move about the classroom, looking for an object that has a sticky note on it. This is a reference for students to answer the question "Where is the ______".

For example: “Where is the globe?” Students will create simple sentences to demonstrate a preposition of place related to the classroom object. Example: “The globe is above the desk”.

Review: Each pair will share one example: A student within the pair will verbally provide a sentence and the other will write it on the whiteboard.

This will give the class multiple examples of different prepositions of place.

Differentiation: Assist each pair in choosing a sentence. The teacher will write the sentence on the whiteboard, learning

    the levels/needs of students.

    2. Action Dictation: This activity is where I will have a white ball and move it in different locations. Students will be able to write the correct preposition of place vocabulary words. For example: If I put the white ball under my desk, students will write "under".

Differentiation: Provide a word bank with the vocabulary of prepositions of place.

    3. Similar to Simon Says=Teacher Says:

Students will be provided with the white ball and each one will have an opportunity to follow my directions in order to demonstrate their application of prepositions of place. For example: I may say "The ball is on the desk". Students will demonstrate this action.

Differentiation: Project the prepositions of place photo up as a reference

    .

    Prepositions of Movement

Implementing Instruction for learning the content:

    • Review the various prepositions of movement with visually guided photos that introduce the vocabulary.

    • The next slide provides excellent drawings of the prepositions of movement with full explanations, example sentences, and how they are applied outside of the classroom setting.

Practice Activities: The following activities are fun, game-based, and interactive. They may be displayed on a projector to involve whole-class interaction, or if your students have access to digital devices they may complete the activities within pairs, groups, or individually.

    • Students will have fun applying their knowledge and understanding of the prepositions of movement within a fun game-based activity.

    • There is an Islcollecive Video with intermittent questions for students to further practice and application.

    • This is followed by a word wall game where students must select the correct vocabulary to match the photos that demonstrate a preposition of movement.

    Worksheet/Formative Assessment:

Students will increase their understanding of prepositions of movement with a worksheet, where there are sentences that require them to fill in the blanks with the correct vocabulary. I have provided the PDF version so you may print it out.

Application: How can students apply what they know?

Total Physical Response to Learning Activity

Teacher says: this is similar to "Simon says", to assess students, where they have to follow instructions from the teacher and demonstrate actual physical movements to show exemplify their knowledge of prepositions of movement and apply them to real-world, authentic scenarios.

Example: Teacher says: walk away from/towards your desk

Various ways to use this TPR Activity:

    • You may pair students up
    • Have each student individually practice
    • Whole class interaction exercise

    Writing and Speaking Practice:

This activity is to encourage students to think about how we can explore using sentences to demonstrate using prepositions of movement in everyday situations. There is a photo for students to refer to the various prepositions of movement and example sentences.

    • Students may take some time to create simple sentences and verbally share them with the class or with their partners or collaborative learning groups.

    • A different approach is providing students with the opportunity to choose one of their sentences, come up to write it on the whiteboard, and practice speaking by sharing their sentences with the students aloud. This provides students will multiple examples of sentences utilizing prepositions of movement, which will further increase their understanding.
