This was one of my favorite activities of the year last year. Definitely a reality check for some students!
My students and I enjoyed this activity. It really got them thinking about their upcoming lives and how to make it work financially. Will be using this resource year after year.

Description

High school students with graduation on their radar often start asking questions about budgeting and personal finance. Now is a great time for them to learn about what expenses look like in college and how to go about making a monthly budget with their various income streams!

In this engaging, hands on activity, your students will receive one of four identities. Each identity has a unique college situation and list of expenses (like tuition, food, housing, etc.) and income streams (from scholarships, loans, jobs, and/or parents). Working in groups or by themselves, they will decide what they want and what they need from a list of possible expenses and then work to create an August budget. Then students will have an opportunity to learn from their peers who had the other three identities.

In addition, I've included 10 tips for college budgeting that you can edit as needed. It includes a sample college budget for students who need more support.

All materials (except the lesson plan) are editable in MS Word and Google Docs. Check the lesson plan for Google Doc links (you will make a copy).

What to Expect:

  • College Budgeting Tips (PDF, MS Word, & Google Doc Versions Available)
  • 4 Identities including Budget Table (PDF, MS Word, & Google Doc Versions Available)
  • Compare Budgets Activity (PDF, MS Word, & Google Doc Versions Available)
  • Suggested Lesson Plan (PDF)

To reduce tech issues, please be sure to have the most recent free version of Adobe Reader downloaded. More help linked here.

This activity will likely take one 40-50 minute class period.

Note: all Google Drive versions appear in the lesson plans of each individual lesson. As of right now, there is no way to copy a folder in Google so for right now you will need to open the lesson plan and make a copy of each digital resource using the provided links and instructions.

Materials Needed:

  • Class set of included worksheets
