    1. Borders by Thomas King - Author Biography - Informational Handout and Worksheets

    Understanding Thomas King's unique life experiences will enrich students' interpretation of "Borders." This author biography shares King’s childhood and upbringing, his travels abroad as a photojournalist, and his education at Sacramento State University, Chico State University, and the University of Utah. 

    This informational handout also explores King’s development as a writer, his immigration to Canada, his political activism, and his numerous achievements and awards, including his membership in the Order of Canada.

    This resource includes accompanying worksheets that prompt students to find the definitions for several vocabulary key terms. These terms will support students' reading of the autobiography and help them further analyze "Borders."

    2. Comprehension Questions for Borders by Thomas King - Analysis of Setting, Key Relationships, and Theme

    These guided reading questions include prompts for comprehension and deeper discussion. The comprehension questions can be used alongside “Borders;” you can encourage students to answer these questions while they are reading to support their understanding. 

    Students are instructed to use supporting evidence from the text wherever possible. You may wish to model the integration of supporting evidence by reading the first two paragraphs of the short story as a class and answering the first two questions collectively.

    3. Borders by Thomas King - Plot Structure Lesson, Handouts - Plot Diagram Activity

    These lessons outline the different parts of a plot’s structure, including the exposition, the conflict, the rising action, the climax, the falling action, and the resolution.  Students can visualize plot structure using the labeled diagrams provided.  Students will also examine linear and non-linear storylines in these informational handouts. 

    Students will then study the plot structure of Thomas King’s short story “borders” using the Plot Diagram Activity.  Read through the instructions on the Plot Points Worksheet to introduce students to this activity; students will cut out the different plot points in the short story and paste them onto the Plot Diagram Worksheet provided.

    4. Borders by Thomas King - Expository Writing - News Article Assignment and Rubric

    This assignment encourages students to center Indigenous voices by capturing the story of the narrator’s family in “Borders.”  Scaffold expository writing using the graphic organizers and assessment materials included with this news article assignment.

    This resource includes Editable Assignment Instructions and a News Report Graphic Organizer.  This graphic organizer features the Five Questions Model (W5H) and will outline students’ text features, body paragraphs, and conclusions.  A News Report Format Handout has also been included to help students format their news articles.

    Finally, an Editable 4-Level Rubric has also been provided for assessment purposes.   This rubric is provided in editable and ready-to-print formats to meet the unique needs of your classroom.
