Want to keep it 100! ✌️with Black History but also get some academic work in too?  Mix history and language arts by teaching the history of Black Wall Street and Community Building. 

Black Wall Street in Durham, NC was a haven for entrepreneurship, innovation and black owned businesses. Teach reading comprehension and critical thinking while your students learn African American History, the history of black businesses and black business owners of Black Wall Street.

Students will learn about prominent businesses such as North Carolina Mutual Insurance, Lincoln Hospital and Mechanics and Farmers Bank and the leaders that started the whole thing! Students will also learn a few basic life skills such as:

✔️The purpose of life insurance

✔️How to calculate insurance coverage

✔️How to apply for life insurance

✔️The history of Lincoln Hospital and its founder

✔️How to apply for a home loan

✔️How to write your own business plan and how to ask for money from investors

Students will also learn what it was like to work and buy homes by referencing job wages and the cost of living in the early 1900’s. They will learn what jobs blacks worked by referencing the book “The Negro Wage Earner” and links to the Sears Catalog for home prices in the early 1900's. Take your students on a journey that will instill the pride of black business and the integrity of hard work, innovation and community building.
