Description

This printable or digital resource is a Terrestrial Biomes Mix-n-Match Card Sort Game used to reinforce and review the characteristics of eight major terrestrial biomes: Tundra, taiga, chaparral, temperate deciduous forest, temperate grasslands, desert, savanna, and tropical rain forest. Students will match the descriptions and pictures to the correct biome. This resource is editable and is easily differentiated for students of different grade levels and ability levels.

Choose to use the traditional printable version, or the paperless, digital Google Apps version. This resource is perfect for traditional classrooms, distance learning, and for students in 1:1 classrooms.

Purpose: To reinforce and review the characteristics of 8 terrestrial biomes.

What is included in this resource?

  • 8 Large Biome Cards cards
  • 67 smaller Answer Cards
  • Paperless, digital Google Apps Version for use in Google Drive, Google Classroom, Microsoft OneDrive, or similar.
  • 5 page Teacher Guide and Answer Key
  • 5 page Student Recording Sheets
  • An edible set of blank cards for adding your own additional information to the game

The number of new science vocabulary words can be overwhelming to our students. Practice and review in a game format is an excellent method of reviewing and reinforcing the vocabulary and concepts.

What will the students be doing?

Students will place the 8 larger biome cards on a table. They will read the answer card and place that card with the correct biome. The answer cards include characteristics of each biome, and pictures of animals living in the biome. The digital version is in a "drag and drop" format.

In my classes, I choose to concentrate on 8 of the more common terrestrial biomes. If you need to add additional biomes, blank cards are included for that purpose. The 8 biomes represented in this card sort game are as follows:

  • Tundra: 12 answer cards.
  • Taiga: 9 answer cards
  • Chaparral: 5 answer cards
  • Temperate Deciduous Forest: 6 answer cards
  • Temperate Grasslands: 9 answer cards
  • Desert: 9 answer cards
  • Savanna: 6 answer cards
  • Tropical Rain Forest: 11 answer cards

Extremely Low Prep! Once you download the product, you are just minutes away from using this game with your class. Simply

  1. Print
  2. Laminate
  3. Cut
  4. Play!
  5. You now have a review game that can be used year after year after year.

Highly adapted for students of different grades or ability levels. This particular game is extremely versatile. Make the game as easy or as hard as you want by selecting which “answer cards” you want to use. This game can be tailored to meet the needs of any life science or biology class. For an advanced class, use all of the answer cards. For a younger class, or a lower level class, pick fewer answer cards to use in the game.

Because you tailor the game to meet your needs, this product is suitable for any life science or biology class in grades 6-12.

I have included a student answer sheet. It is an optional component. If you choose, you can use the answer sheet to have the student record each answer statement. The completed answer sheet makes a perfect study guide for the unit test.

How can this card sort game be used?
