Our students CAN make a difference in their own lives, their school, and their community, so why not challenge them to do so with a new project?
BE THE CHANGE is your solution! Designed with the Genius Hour methodology in mind, Be the Change is an inquiry-based, research-driven long-term project in which students identify a problem they feel passionately about changing for the better. They then proceed to learn about the issue, write about the issue, share what they've learned with others, give back to the community to help make a change, and finally present about their journey at an end of the year festival in front of the whole school community.

An Outline of the Project
LEARN: Students begin by learning about their project. After a YouTube playlist scavenger hunt, the students will narrow down their interests and passions to select a topic. From there, students conduct research, complete an annotated bibliography, and then select 1-2 nonfiction books (I highly recommend memoir!) to read and complete an Active Reading Journal.
WRITE: Next, students will complete a written proposal. This is the step where students showcase their knowledge from research and propose what they will do for the next two stages in the project. What will they share with others? How will they give back to the community? Your approval here is needed, and if the proposal isn't sufficiently strong enough, you have a great reason to help them practice revision! Back to the drawing board, kiddos!!
SHARE: The third stage is all about sharing with others and raising awareness. By visiting their local church, speaking in a study hall class, hosting a Facebook LIVE event, or otherwise leveraging technology and social media, students must share the top 5 most important facts or details about their issue that they've been researching.
GIVE: This is the best part - now, it's time for students to get really active and give back to their community! From hosting events at school, to fundraisers for global charities, to visiting the local food bank, students create a plan of action and then follow through on that plan providing video and photo evidence of their experiences. Students also compose a narrative essay about their service.
PRESENT: Finally, the big day will arrive! Students will present their projects (from what they learned all the way through to what they did for service) to either a festival of community members or perhaps just in your classroom. Either way, there are plenty of ideas and resources in this product to help you plan an unforgettable Be the Change Festival!
