Description

I follow the order of this PowerPoint when teaching basic math facts to my primary grade students: zero strategies, count on / count back, names of five, five strategies, using tens (including ten strategies, names of ten, near tens, nine strategies, eight strategies), and using doubles (including doubles, near doubles, middle number). Each strategy is colour coded. I created strategy flashcards (can be printed off from my store) that matched the colour. There is also a personal strategies chart where students can colour in the legend and the strategies they choose to use to solve each question.
USING TENS - learn the basic names of ten (ways to add to ten), then use those facts to help with near tens (questions with an answer of nine - ex. 4+5 is almost 5+5 - or eleven - ex. 5+6 is almost 5+5), or to answer questions with eight (add two to the eight to make ten - ex. 8+4 = 8+2+2 = 10+2) or nine (add one to the nine to make ten - ex. 9+5 = 9+1+4 = 10+4)
USING DOUBLES - learn the doubles facts and use them to help answer questions that are near (almost) doubles (ex. 4+5 is just one more than 4+4 or one less than 5+5), or that are missing the middle number (ex. 6+8, when you count 6,7,8, seven is the middle number - just double it - 7+7=14 - you can also think of this as taking one from the higher number and giving it to the lower number to create a doubles fact)
I LIKE TO USE TEN FRAMES TO GIVE A VISUAL FOR THESE STRATEGIES :)
