Back to School Name Callers that toss value into student names and build vibrant learning communities. It touched me deeply when I taught in China and was told new meanings for my name in that culture. Just as I also enjoy knowing that my name means Light in my culture, your students will benefit more from sharing their names and meanings.
Students will discover why their names spoken respectfully, spike well-being in the area of their brain that operates personal self-awareness and well-being.
Learners experience meaning through these tasks, how their names literally link to personal intelligence. They learn why we forget names, how to remember more, and will be challenged to discover why their names and those of their peers are worth valuing.
Whole group tasks such tags distributed for all students to add a valued trait beside each peer’s name. They then post supportive forms that contain cool comments from peers in a place that will encourage them on days they feel down.
Additional tags and suggestions are provided here for caregivers who attend your class events, for assuming roles of favorite characters from course content, for bulletin board creations containing student names, for adding visual icons to their tags in ways that illustrate strengths, and for creating a class set of names to engage actively in lessons.
Enjoy these materials and have fun taking name calling to whole new levels at the start of each new term. Benefit every student who comes to your class with a handle to display. I hope your classes enjoy these tags and tasks as much as mine did!
Hopefully these ready-to-roll brain-based materials will benefit your learners and leaders as they do mine at middle, secondary, university levels and beyond.
