This resource includes 13 essay prompts for Toni Morrison's novel Beloved. Appropriate for AP Language and Composition as well as high school English Language Arts. For a peer-based learning approach, these prompts can also be used as discussion questions.

Beloved is a novel written about an escaped female slave named Sethe who attempts to reclaim her family's identity. Set in Ohio during the mid-1800s, this novel explores notions of identity, community, freedom and generational trauma. A Pulitzer Prize winner, the novel is a combination of powerful composition and painful prose. This novel is suitable for AP Language and Composition classes, as well as senior English Language Arts courses.

This resource includes 10 free response essay questions that students can complete during the duration of this novel study, or as a final assessment for this unit. These questions explore important symbols, characters, and motifs within the novel, and will encourage students to develop their own perspective and make connections to the world around them. Additionally, there are 3 free response essay prompts specifically designed for students in AP Language and Composition, or students studying rhetoric and stylistic composition in senior level English Language Arts. That is 13 essay prompts in total!

These essay prompts can also be used as discussion questions for teachers who would like to examine all of the ideas presented within this resource, or to take a more collaborative and peer-based learning approach. I recommend using Mondays Made Easy's Discussing Racial Inequality SELF-ASSESSMENT CHECKLISTS and CONTRACT TEMPLATE to prepare for this discussion, along with the Student-led GROUP DISCUSSION OUTLINE Questions for Middle School and High School
