An active engagement activity that I do after this mini-lesson is present students with various examples of literature that they categorize based on their new understanding of author's purpose. I label 3 baskets: "persuade ☏," "inform ☄," and "entertain ❀." As I hold up and introduce each piece of literature (i.e. recipes, comic books, instruction manuals, etc.), they decide which basket it belongs in. Students always enjoy this part where they take the abstract ideas we discussed in the PPT and make them concrete.
