What educators are saying

My students loved this resource. They were tuned in, attentive, and seemed to grasp the topics. I would recommend it 100%!
The text samples are very appropriate and challenging for students. This resource worked really well.

Description

Identify author's purpose for writing and challenge students to analyze author's point of view for bias! This lesson includes an informative author's purpose power point (or a modern, engaging slides presentation that uses humor). Students will be able to identify and distinguish between writing to persuade, inform, explain, entertain, and describe.

After reviewing the different types of writing, students will engage in high-interest author's purpose analysis activities. Check out the author's point of view and bias mini-lessons that are included!

✅Examining Author's Purpose Using Different Text Types

In this activity, students read the communication between stakeholders regarding the adoption of school uniforms at Hazelwood High School.

The communication includes an excerpt of a speech given by a teacher at a faculty meeting, an email from the administration to the faculty, a letter sent home to parents, an email between a uniform supply company and the school's principal, and a texting conversation between 2 Hazelwood High School students.

✅Using Author's Purpose in Writing - Writing to Persuade

As an extension activity, students write letters to the school's news team editor in support of or against school uniforms.

✅Bias Buster Website Evaluation Activity

Students will first view a slides presentation on the 5Ws in website evaluation. Using the 5 Ws Evaluation Method, students next examine 4 pairs of websites.

Each website pair features the same topic or subject matter. One website is a credible source that provides a balanced viewpoint. The other website is slanted or contains biased information!

Students will be challenged to identify the author's purpose in both websites while analyzing each source for bias!

This CCSS-aligned digital author's purpose mini-unit includes the following materials:

  • 25 Slides on Identifying Author’s Purpose
  • Author's Purpose slides handout with questions (for student accountability) and teacher's answer key
  • Author's Point of View in Different Texts Activity Handouts with Teacher's Answer Key
  • Letter or Email to the Tiger Times News Editor (extension activity or use as homework)
  • 10 Slides on Identifying Bias and the 5 W's method for source evaluation
  • Bias Buster Activity - Comparing and Evaluating 2 Websites on the Same Topic
  • 5 Ws for Website Evaluation Poster or Flyer to display
  • Bias Buster Graphic Organizer with a checklist of guiding prompts
  • Pdf Teacher's Guide with Drive links, Implementation Notes, and Directions for Microsoft Office and Power Point

*ALL materials are digital and editable. The resources can be printed or downloaded in Office format, but you must have a Google account to access the materials.

Re-use the information on author's purpose and the writing types for state testing prep! Implementation will take 2-3 days to complete, and the materials are appropriate for 5th-9th grade students.
