    Description

This author's purpose bundle is designed to teach upper elementary and middle school students about an author's purpose for writing a literary piece in a way that will keep them engaged. This bundle has everything you need to teach your students about the FIVE categories of author's purpose. This bundled product takes the PIE approach to teaching author's purpose to the next level. Students are taught to determine whether an author's purpose is to persuade, inform, entertain, describe, or explain using the PIEED acronym.

The activities in this bundle make learning about author's purpose fun and easy! Students love the activities while teachers love the convenience of these no-prep resources that can be used year after year! These activities can be used for test prep, review, or introduction of the skill. It includes a PowerPoint, worksheets, task cards, posters, a craftivity, two games, an assessment, and more!

    • These plans outline how and when I use each of the included resources! You don't have to follow the lesson plan format I provide, of course, but it might be helpful in providing a bit of direction for you.

A BIT MORE EXPLANATION: I used to teach the well-known PIE method, but I quickly determined that I wasn't adequately preparing my students for the standardized tests they had to take in the spring. I feel that there are two primary weaknesses with the PIE method of teaching author's purpose. First, most tests do not limit answer choices to persuade, inform, and entertain! Furthermore, the tests often have more than one answer choice with a particular verb as an option. For example, a test question might be written something like this:

What is the author's primary purpose for writing this passage:

    A. to inform readers about the history of Earth Day

    B. to inform readers which harmful actions are done most often to our Earth.

    C. to persuade readers to recycle

    D. to persuade readers to ride a bike whenever possible

Therefore, I added explain and describe to the mix, and I started creating my own materials that I felt addressed the two weaknesses of the PIE method.
