Description

This TAB-style Art Project Proposal sheet allows students freedom of choice when responding to an art prompt. Instead of all students following the same process to create a similar end product, this graphic organizer guides students through the basic steps of envisioning/planning a unique idea.

With this sheet, students will determine which form of art they will make (painting, collage, illustration, comic, sculpture, or something else to be written in), state what their inspiration is (which may include a teacher-given prompt), choose which mediums they are planning to use to complete their idea, and finally create a sketch of their vision.

I have successfully used this process with grades 3-6 after giving them an artistic problem to solve. I recommend that students are given a timeframe in which their project must be completed (ex: "Your proposed project must be completed within ____ class periods") along with other restrictions as needed (size, amount of materials, etc).

This style of project allows students to practice important skills such as self reliance, problem solving, time management, and creativity among others. Students can fill out the sheet in any order. The sheet can be altered in a pdf editor to type in a teacher created goal, omit certain material choices, or make other changes as necessary.
