A Word About This Resource:
I created this resource for my own students because I wanted to have an efficient way for them to learn all of the elements and the art of essay writing. Teaching essay writing is a monumental task! I realized quickly that my lecture and note-taking methods were not working. Students were only absorbing about 20% of my instruction because they weren't ready to absorb information for skills in which they hadn't had an opportunity to practice. They needed to have hands-on materials at their fingertips. They needed a variety of videos, examples, instructions and mentor samples as they worked through each paragraph and process. They needed information and instruction from me on THEIR terms, when THEY were ready to absorb it. Needless to say, after changing my attitude and creating student-centered resources, I watched my students' writing skills sky-rocket!
Here's what happened when I started using front-loaded, STUDENT-CENTERED resources:
1-Advanced and driven students began working ahead and EXCEEDING my expectations! I honestly did not realize how capable my students were until I got out of their way.
2-Average students began to realize that many of their peers were moving forward and this lit a fire under many of them to take ownership of their learning!
3-With so many of my students taking charge of their learning because they had the tools necessary to work without my constant attention, I became MUCH freer to spend extra time with my struggling writers and was able to help them improve their game as well!
4-Grading became FAR less cumbersome and frustrating! Students were turning in better quality work. Grading awful essays is maddening! It is disheartening to see students making mistakes on skills for which you taught your heart out. Student-centered resources puts the onus on the students and arms them with everything they need to succeed.
