Annotated Bibliography Rubric Packet (For Use in All Subjects)

An Annotated Bibliography is a great way to get students into locating sources, organizing their research, and using the required formatting style to cite sources. It also teaches students to summarize their sources, identify important points within sources, and think about how they will use those sources in their research paper or project.

This packet contains Annotated Bibliography Rubrics that can be used in all subject areas. The packet contains several variations of my standard Annotated Bibliography Rubric, which are useful in classrooms in all subject areas and across several grade levels, including post-secondary. The rubric variations can be used in Grades 6 – 8, 9-12, Higher Education, and in classrooms which use MLA and APA formatting. In addition, the packet contains rubrics that can be used in classes that require another type of formatting style.

My rubrics are all letter grade rubrics, so there is no need to try assigning points and calculate numerous scores for several categories. While the rubrics have letter grades, I assign plus/minus grades as follows: A+ = 100, A = 95, A- = 92, B+ = 88, B = 85, B- = 82, and so on. Sometimes, however, a student's writing may fall into more than one letter grade category. For instance, the student's paper may be an A in content and organization, but a D or F in formatting and grammar/mechanics. In such a case, I assign the plus/minus grade for each category (e.g. content, organization, formatting, and grammar/mechanics), and I average the grades. I find this to be much easier and faster than using rubrics that require assigning point values for each category and adding them together. Any grading process that saves time and is easy for students to understand is worth trying!
