Description
Helping children discover, analyze or talk about their strengths is one of the pillars of school counseling. I believe assisting children to identify and cultivate their strengths means setting them up for success. So to identify their strengths is always in the back of my mind. One resource I always use with my students is animal strength cards. Using the analogy with animals makes this activity easy to understand, even for younger students.
However, I often ran into the same two problems with my students while using animal strengths cards:
- Some students have trouble understanding what certain strengths mean.
- Some of my students have a hard time understanding how specific strengths would play out in real life.
For this reason, I created this wonderful resource with 40 beautifully illustrated animal strength cards. Each strength card features on the verso a short description and an example of using that strength in a real-life situation.
What is included?
- Solution Focused Question List
- 40 double-sided, illustrated cards including strengths like loyal, honest, hardworking, organized, tolerant, open-minded, problem-solver, creative, clever, driven, and much more.
Ways to use this resource:
- to help kids identify their strengths;
- to support kids in goal setting,
- to encourage kids to explore their values;
- to provide a critical reflection opportunity;
- to evaluate your student/client self-awareness, perceived self-esteem, and much more.

Have a treat!
Another kind of Gratitude Jar! Teaching gratitude requires persistence in providing enough opportunities to practice. One way I like to integrate teaching gratitude is by using a Gratitude Jar (a thrifted candy dish) filled with beautifully illustrated quotes about gratitude and appreciation. At the end of sessions or by request, I encourage students to choose a message. If they want to, they can keep the quote and put it on their mood board, locker, etc.
