What educators are saying

I love this resource! The students were very engaged and enjoyed it as well. Great addition to PLTW curriculum.
This is one of the best resources I bought this year. My students loved creating their new animals and were using appropriate vocabulary such as adaptations and habitats. They were engaged and excited to share their writing and illustrations with their peers.

Description

Are you looking for a creative way to check your students' understanding of animal adaptations? In the Create a Creature project, students combine science, writing, and art to create an animal (or adapt an existing one) to survive in the new environment.

The Create a Creature resource includes:

  • Lesson plans
  • Small group activity to review environments and animal adaptations
  • Project Assignment to engage students
  • Two versions of student planning pages
  • Four versions of the final project pages
  • Grading rubrics
  • Example of a completed project

The Create a Creature Project was created to integrate science, art, and writing, and I'm thrilled with the feedback from educators who have used the project with their students:

  • "My students loved completing this project at the end of our unit! The project is easy to prep, organized, and engaging! It makes a perfect hallway display! I will definitely use this again next year!" -Jessica B.

  • "My students loved this activity - we used it after studying adaptations and biomes. I liked that it had a preplanning sheet and then a final copy sheet - I was able to support my ELAR partner with the prewriting and then the finished product. The preplanning sheet is extremely helpful for my struggling students. They really enjoyed creating their new animals." -Tracey M.

  • "What a fun way to wrap up our biomes/habitats and animal adaptations unit! This is a task we usually have students do but love that I found this with its organizers and step-by-step working through it!" -Chelsea H.

You can finish this activity in one to three class periods, depending on your available time. I have included a suggested lesson plan sequence for two days. Each student begins with a planning page. Completing the planning page will help students do the design work of creating their new creature and describing adaptations that help it survive.

Please check the preview to see everything in the animal adaptations project!

Thank you!
