Description

Students choose a theme from twelve universal motifs, read a book of choice, and take notes on it. After that, they make connections between their reading and various other sources, from current events to poetry, short stories, movies, lyrics, museums, etc. to use as supporting material that enable them to fully develop their thesis. Next, they create their own personalized schedule that coincides with the teacher's criteria and the project's requirements. The variety of research material empowers students to keep their brains in gear and their skills in motion.

This activity reflects my top three goals for middle and high school students:

1. SHOW them how to think concretely and analytically

2. HELP them to express themselves verbally and in writing, and

3. LET them build powerful education homes that allow them to be intelligent, active citizens.

It incorporates reading and viewing comprehension of a wide range of material from a variety of sources with well-developed analytic writing.

This research expands their knowledge base and empowers students to understand the connections between their school studies and world in which they live.

The packet includes a source organizer graphic, and information on finding sources, taking source notes, finding citation guideline links for various bibliographic styles, and a research paper grading rubric.

As always, this activity- PDF version- may be downloaded and printed for classroom use. Also, an Easel Activity is ready to be used for Google Classroom. Teachers may choose to add an interactive layer of their own for digital use by clicking on the red "Use as a Buyer" rectangle on the product's page.
