How to use this Analysis Activity for Goldstein’s Book in 1984:

1984 by George Orwell is a classic dystopian novel recounting one man's rebellion against an oppressive and restrictive regime. Rich with parallels to historical and modern societies, this story highlights themes surrounding propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, and mass control.

Students may be interested to learn that Orwell's original draft of 1984 has been entirely rewritten; the only remaining part of the draft is Emmanuel Goldstein's "Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism," which is delivered in part 2, chapter 9.

Dense with theory, this section of the text can be a challenge for students; however, it serves as the foundation of the novel and is therefore important to read closely.

With the help of these guided reading comprehension questions, students will be prompted to pay close attention to the key areas of this manuscript to gain a deeper understanding of Goldstein's book.

This resource is divided into three parts:

-Part A includes 13 comprehension questions.  These guided reading questions prompt students to think deeply about different aspects of Goldstein's theory and communicate their knowledge and comprehension in their own words.  These questions analyze the following aspects of George Orwell’s 1984:

  • Definitions of key terms and phrases including “oligarchical collectivism,” “doublethink,” “War is Peace,” and more
  • Characteristics of war over time
  • The goals of the Party
  • The characteristics of Big Brother
  • Class distinctions and relationships between classes
  • And more!

- Part B includes a blank interactive map that prompts students to identify the boundaries of Oceania, Eastasia, and Eurasia.

- Part C has students analyze different literary devices within Goldstein’s book, including:

  • Aphorism
  • Analogy
  • Personification
  • Metaphor
  • And more!

These inquiry-based questions and activities are sure to challenge your students and support them in analyzing this important chapter in George Orwell’s 1984!
