Description
Help students to explore what makes their community unique with guided project-based learning! Students will explore their favorite parts of their community through differentiated posters or a DIGITAL project. This activity is divided into three levels to be easily adapted for different abilities within a single classroom.
Each student will make a project that explores the important people, places, and groups in their community. Each project level asks students to make deeper connections between each place in the community and its importance to the student and the community as a whole.
Students will explore these aspects of their community:
● Family
● A favorite restaurant
● School
● Team (or special group)
● A special place in the community (Students’ Choice!)
●Optional: Church
This project is clearly divided into three levels for easy differentiated instruction:
Level One This community project has a lower writing component and is geared towards ESL/ELL students, struggling learners, and those with written output difficulties.
Level Two This community project has both written and visual components in a fairly equal balance. Students are asked to plan, draft, and write their projects.
Level Three This community project has a larger written component, and ask students to reflect further than levels one and two. Use this project for upper grades, or students who need a challenge.
Student self-assessments and teacher rubrics are also included to easily assess the project as a whole.
This unit also includes three DIGITAL, differentiated, GOOGLE SLIDES versions of the community projects. These can be easily uploaded into Google Classroom for distance or at-home learning.
