Description
This is a set of 5 graphic organizers designed to help students practice the procedures for factoring. The goal is to use the organizer until the procedures are mastered and this "skeleton" is no longer needed!
The graphic organizers are:
1. Factoring by Grouping - The process of taking a four-term polynomial and breaking it apart into two binomials, factoring the GCF from each binomial, and using the GCFs to create one of the binomials in factored form and one of the "twins," which is the binomial repeated in the parentheses.
2. Factoring trinomials of the form x^2 + bx + c - The process of listing the factor pairs of c until a factor pair is found that has a sum of b. If the values were m and p, the factored form would then be (x + m)(x + p). (Two per page)
3. Factoring trinomials of the form ax^2 + bx + c - The process of calculating ac and listing the factor pairs of ac until a factor pair is found that has a sum of b. The trinomial is then rewritten as a four-term polynomial as ax^2 + mx + px + c, and then factoring by grouping is done.
4. Factoring differences of squares - The process of determining the square root of the first term and the square root of the second term, and using them in the form of (x + y)(x - y), where the result is a binomial. (Two per page)
5. Factoring perfect square trinomials - The process of determining the square root of the first term, the square root of the second term, and then using them to put into the form of (x + y)^2 or (x - y)^2. (One of each on one page)
Ideas for use:
-Laminate for students to write on
-Place inside pocket-whiteboards for use as needed (this is what I am doing!)
-Print on paper to write on
-Leave on board as a reminder
-Give out copies for students to reference as a reminder
-Print multiple organizers onto one page front and back
