Description
Engage late middle school and early high school students in a study of Aladdin! In this task, which can begin a study of Literature of the Middle East, used as a 2-period stand-alone lesson, or as part of a children's literature course, students view and analyze the opening song of Disney's Aladdin and then analyze the beginnings of two translations of the text, Aladdin, a story from the oldest collection of Middle Eastern literature, A Thousand and One Nights.
Students will be surprised to learn differences between the old accounts of the tale compared to Disney's treatment. They will also analyze how single words greatly impact the characterizations of Aladdin and his parents and will craft those observations into a short analysis.
Note: This resource engages with the opening paragraph of Aladdin, not the whole text.
