What educators are saying

Thank you for this resource. I teach PLTW's IED and mainly use the old legacy curriculum--I feel that it lacks a bit in some areas and this resource is exactly what I was looking for to "fill in the blanks" where my curriculum lacks. Appreciate this resource and glad I found it!!

Description

This lesson is a great introduction to visual design for engineering, design, and architecture students. It will also work great for any art or STEAM class studying the principles and elements of visual design.

This lesson answers questions such as:

  • What are "aesthetics?"
  • Why do aesthetics matter?
  • How do professionals approach aesthetic design?
  • What are the principles and elements of visual design?
  • How can the principles and elements be used to achieve a desired aesthetic?
  • How can we discuss and communicate about aesthetics?

If you are new to this topic, have no fear. Each slide is filled with speaker notes to help newbies get familiar with the content. You can also opt to share the complete recorded, narrated, edited video lesson with your students.

The video lesson is about 42 minutes long, but I find that it usually takes me about 80-120 minutes to really cover everything when I present the lesson live and encourage student discussion.

This is a terrific way to introduce the fundamentals of visual design. It is geared toward high school students but would be great for post-secondary as well. It might be a little deep for middle school, unless you are teaching a very targeted unit on the principles and elements.
