What educators are saying

My students loved using this resource. It is a very well planned unit on Aeronautics and Aerodynamics. It kept the students engaged and excited with the experiments. Thank you for creating it.
Very well put together resource. Even as a novice I was able to teach my students the concepts. Activities were fun and a great reinforcement to the information.

The Basic Aeronautics lesson covers the following topics:

    • Definition of Aeronautics
    • Definition of Aerodynamics
    • Composition & Properties of Air
    • Air Pressure
    • Air Temperature
    • Air Density
    • Viscosity
    • Viscus Drag
    • Laminar Flow
    • Speed of Sound
    • MACH

The Four Forces of Flight lesson covers the following topics:

    • Lift
    • Drag
    • Thrust
    • Weight
    • Requirements for flight to take place
    • Vectors
    • Camber
    • Angle of attack
    • Dynamic lift
    • Friction drag
    • Form drag
    • Induced drag
    • Turbulence
    • Stalls
    • Weight distribution
    • Thrust vectoring
    • Supersonic flight
    • Compression waves
    • Expansion wave

The Bernoulli’s Principle lesson covers the following topics:

    • Airfoil
    • Leading edge
    • Camber
    • Trailing edge
    • Cord
    • Relative wind
    • Angle of Attack
    • Bernoulli’s Principle
    • Streamlines

The Advances in Aeronautics lesson covers the following topics:

    • X-15
    • XB-70
    • Advances in construction materials
    • Forward-swept wings
    • Oblique wings
    • Joined wings
    • Mission-adaptive wings
    • Winglets
    • Canards
    • Rutan Voyager
    • Human powered flight

The Double Wing Loop Activity is an investigation covering all four forced of flight.

Students build two wing design paper airplanes. One with a single loop, and another with two loops.

They then conduct flight testing to see the different characteristics of each design.

    Materials:

    • One straw
    • Design patterns
    • Blacklines 1 and 2
    • Scotch tape
    • 8 -1/2 x 8-1/2” paper for each student
    • Venn Diagram
    • Single Loop Plane design
    • Double Loop Plane design

    Class time:

    • One period.

The Aerodynamic Daring Flyers Force of Lift Activity is a hands-on activity where students see how the Force of Lift is affected by the shape of a paper airplane. Their task is to design a paper airplane that can perform 8 different stunts.

    Students need basic materials:

    • Several sheets of 8-1/2 x 11” paper
    • Scissors
    • Scotch tape
    • Data sheet for each student
    • Design sheet for each student

    Class time:

    • One period

Blow Dart Jets is a hands-on activity where students see how the Force of Thrust and the shape of a paper plane can affect how far it can fly.

    Students need basic materials:

    • 2 straws with different diameters
    • Masking tape
    • Scissors
    • Index cards
    • Rulers
    • Tape measures
    • Data sheet for each student

    Class time:

    • One period

The Paper Helicopters Gravity Buster Activity investigates how the Force of Lift can counteract the Force of Gravity.

    • The activity gives step-by-step directions for the students to construct their own Paper Helicopter. They then do a series of experiments, along with their teammates, to see how adding staples to their Paper Helicopter effects its lift.
    • There are four conclusion questions the students need to answer.
    • There are also two included graphs that need to be completed.
    • The activity should take one class period.
    • The activity works well as part of an aerodynamics class, physics class, or even as a first day of class group activity.

Paratroopers Ago! Activity Students use a simple supermarket bag, and a clothes pin to explore the principle of Drag.

    • Objective: Investigate the principle of drag.
    • Problem: How does a parachute create drag for a falling object?
    • Materials: Each pair of students needs one plastic grocery bag (with handles), and one clothespin (or a large paperclip)
    • Lesson Length: One class period

The Aeronautics & Aerodynamics Study Guide is two pages ling. The front page has over 20 key Primate Vocabulary Words that the students need to define. The second page has over 10 open response type questions the students need to answer.

Aeronautics & Aerodynamics Justpardy Review Game PowerPoint. Justpardy has a similar concept to the game seen on TV.

    Game Play Suggestion

    • Set up tables in front of the classroom, 1 table per team.
    • Divide the class up into 3-5 team, depending on class size.
    • Have each student taking a turn coming up that teams table at the front of the class.
    • Rotate, so each team gets to pick the Answer on the screen.
    • Each team representative in the front of the class writes down their answer.
    • For each correct answer the team gets a point.
    • The team with the most points when the game ends wins.

    • I found that doing the game this way, each and every student participates. This prevents that one student from dominating the game.

    • This is a fun way to review for a test.

The Aeronautics & Aerodynamics Portfolio/Reflective Journal is an assessment tool where the STUDENT picks how they want to show you they have mastery of the subject.

    • The students are given 7 different objectives they need to show mastery of. They do this by completing a project. They type is of their choice. These are some suggestions:
    • Make a collage
    • Comprise a song or rap
    • Construct a mobile
    • Make a poster
    • Assemble a scrap book
    • Traditional answer in writing (in a "project" form)
    • Other ideas you have (check with me first)

The Aeronautics & Aerodynamics Quiz and Test Pack consists of Two Quizzes and One Test.

    Quiz: Four Forces of Flight

    • 8 Matching questions
    • Answer key included

    Quiz: Aeronautics & Aerodynamics

    • 3 True/False questions
    • 7 Multiple choice questions
    • Answer key included

    Test: Aeronautics & Aerodynamics

"This is so good! I used this to kick off an aerospace unit, and it did not disappoint!!" Jennifer M.

"Amazing resource and I was grateful to have it. It really gave me the ability to sculpt quality lessons with far less prep than trying to do it all on my own. Thank you!" Roxanne C.

"I used this material to open a unit on Aerodynamics for an elective in Engineering principles. This material was accessible to all of my students not just the ones that are good at math. I used the material as a starting point and was please with it." Claudette C.

"I am currently teaching both in person and remotely. This is my first year in our school's air and space program and it has no curriculum. This was fantastic for getting me started and was laid out really well. Thanks! I would be lost with out the direction of this resource." Dara R.

    "Great resource." Jodi M.
