Is it really necessary to teach primary students grammar?

Without a doubt, the answer is YES. Teaching young children the way our language works is incredibly important. This will help them be better readers and writers.

Most children can tell you that a verb is an action and an adverb describes a verb. But do they understand what an adverb actually is and can they identify verbs in a sentence?

Watch how this unit transforms the way students understand and use language while reading and writing.

WHAT ARE ADVERBS?

We focus on identifying the four types of adverbs, and lessons are broken down into these four categories: how, when, where and how often adverbs

Slideshow

Real life picture poster

Posters for students to write on and color

Worksheets

Cut/paste activities to sort adverbs

IDENTIFYING ADVERBS

Worksheets - find the adverbs in the sentence

Adverb picture hunts - two versions in both color and black and white - students look at the picture and write the adverbs they see. They must sort the adverbs into the correct column: when, how, where or how often adverbs.

SORTING ADVERBS

Practice identifying and sorting adverbs - when, where, how and how often

Cut/paste sorting activities (x2)

Sort the color coded and black/white adverb cards into the correct category - perfect for charts and literacy centers

VERB AND ADVERB MATCHING GAME

Students play a fun game matching the verb with the correct adverb. We then practice orally creating sentences and then write sentences for each matching pair.

ADVERBS TO DESCRIBE WORK

We use jobs in our community to practice using adverbs to describe how each person works. For seven different "jobs" (such as farmer, lifeguard, teacher, firefighter, etc.) we use how, when, where and how often adverbs to describe how each persons works. Word banks are included for each profession so students can write four sentences about each person.

This is a complete unit to teach grammar in an engaging, fun way for primary students.
