Description

Learn to determine unknown whole number in addition and subtraction equations using bar models/tape diagrams. (For Distance Learning)

Using the model method, young learners are able to visualize the concept. It sets a strong foundation for young learners before they progress to problem solving.

This pack of resources help students to understand:

- Why subtraction is applied when solving an unknown addend problem. (For example 7+ ___=10)

- How to determine unknown whole number on the left side of an addition or subtraction equation. (For example __+ 8 = 10, 5 + __ = 11, __ - 8 = 10 and 14 - __ = 5)

- How to interpret “more than” or “less than” problems without relying on “cue word”.

Included in this pack are:

- Illustrations for you to teach students to determine unknown whole number in addition and subtraction equation. Using models help to interpret the "why" and "how" such that students do not rely on "more than" or "less than" cue words to solve problems.

- Exercises for students to practice

1. Add when two parts are given (12 exercises)

2. Learn to Subtract when whole and part are given (12 exercises)

3. Learn to Find the unknown number in an addition equation (10 exercises)

4. Learn to Find the unknown number in a subtraction equation (10 exercises)

5. Learn to Add and Subtract with “more than” or “less than” without “cue word”. (20 exercises)

The Addition section of this resource is also found in Add with Bar Models/Tape Diagrams
