Addition Strategies - Split Strategy Video and Support Materials

Do you want your students to be confident and capable mathematicians? I believe that for this to happen, students need to be equipped with a range of strategies, which they can add to their math tool belt!

The ‘Split Strategy’ has a number of names depending on what curriculum you teach under. For example – ‘Standard Place Value Partitioning’ or ‘Partitioning Numbers for Addition’ etc. For this resource, I haven chosen to refer to it as the ‘Split Strategy’. This is because it’s the name that I have found sticks the most with the kids I teach. Here is a basic example so you know what strategy I am referring to…

25 + 34 = ?

20 + 30 = 50

5 + 4 = 9

50 + 9 = 59

INCLUDED CONTENT

1) INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO – This video explains the ‘Split Strategy’ and how to apply it to ADDITION questions. Total playing length 8:45 minutes. However, this video is designed to be interactive and there are multiple prompted opportunities to pause the video for class discussions and activities. At the beginning of the video, I explain how to ‘split’ a number, based on its place value. I then explain how we can use this skill as an addition strategy. I provide different examples of how to do this and then the children are encouraged give it a go themselves. There is also a short ‘movement break’ to keep the students engaged and their minds focused.

2) Worksheets (listed under supporting document preview) - Currently I teach a class with VERY diverse abilities and I understand that there is not a ‘one size fits all’ worksheet. However, I have created these worksheets, with the intention that there is hopefully one for all the ability levels in your class (and also mine!). Students who need support will be taken right back to the very beginning of the strategy and supported with basic skills and number knowledge. Likewise, students who need to be challenged will be given a chance to apply the strategy though word problems. Detailed answers are also provided. An additional matching activity is also included, where students need to partition numbers by sorting and locating the correct amount of hundreds, tens and ones. I have designed these activities to be used after watching my ‘Split Strategy’ video.
