What educators are saying

These were awesome! We made an integer ocean for the wall, and it was helpful to teach negative numbers.
I love this set! I’ve looked at it for years (ugh, I know) and finally bought it. I’m so glad I did!! The images are super cute and the concepts make understanding integers and integer operations much more clear.

Description

Understanding, comparing, and operating with integers is engaging and meaningful with the help of real world context and a vertical number line. Your students can make sense of how we add and subtract integers!

Included in this lesson pack:

  • Large vertical number line representing sea level (color & black ink versions)
  • 22 moveable cards with sea creatures and objects (color & black ink versions)
  • Over 60 exploration word problems
  • Card sort: Matching real world context with integer expressions
  • Answer Keys

{Check out the preview to see it all!}

Assemble the large number line to serve as a visual reference for building conceptual understanding of positive and negative numbers. Then use the included activities to guide your students in exploring integer relations, absolute value, addition, and subtraction.

These resources will help your students develop the following skills:

  • Comparing positives and negatives
  • Understanding absolute value
  • Finding distances between integers
  • Adding and subtracting integers
  • Relating expressions and operations to real world context
  • Reasoning as they solve

Plus, the activities are engaging! The practice problems guide students in deepening their understanding. You can also create your own great classroom discussions by moving the animal creatures around on the number line.

Answer keys to the student practice sheets are included. The practice problem sets A through P are also included in a PowerPoint if you want to display them on a large screen for discussion.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
Find and position integers and other rational numbers on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram; find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.
Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers.
Understand the absolute value of a rational number as its distance from 0 on the number line; interpret absolute value as magnitude for a positive or negative quantity in a real-world situation. For example, for an account balance of –30 dollars, write |–30| = 30 to describe the size of the debt in dollars.
