What educators are saying

I love using these at the end of a unit or on sub days. They take a long time, but students get to self-check and ensure they are on the right track. Thank you.
Great review activity and reinforcement of skills learned. Required students to solve problems and not just guess answers

Description

Adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators has never been so engaging! These fraction color by number math worksheets and digital resource offer engaging and versatile practice - much more fun than regular fraction worksheets!

  • These fraction coloring pages help bring mindfulness, wellness, and quietness AND using coloring sheets in math has been shown to help reluctant students feel more comfortable with math!

In these fraction activities, students solve 15 or 20 problems by adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.

  • These are great self-checking activities. Students will immediately know whether or not they solved correctly - if their answer is incorrect, they won't find it on the coloring sheet!

Check out the video preview for a demo of the digital color by number (students need to know how to use the 'Fill color' feature).

These fraction problems require students to:

  • Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators
  • Solve word problems by adding or subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators

This set of easy-prep adding and subtracting fraction sheets and digital resource includes:

1) 4 print versions, to give you options for differentiation OR to assign one for in-class work and another for homework, centers, extra practice, etc.

  • Print Version A
    • Problem sheet with 20 questions
    • Coloring sheet
  • Print Version B
    • Problem sheet with 15 questions (all different from and less challenging than Version A)
    • Coloring sheet (same pattern as Version A, different colors)
  • Print Version C and D
    • Problem sheet with 20 questions (same problems as Version A EXCEPT for 5 problems (numbers 13, 14, 17, 19, & 20). These 5 are a little easier. They have smaller denominators and are easier to simplify (if simplifying is necessary).
    • Coloring sheets with the same pattern but different colors (this is a different, less detailed sheet than Versions A & B)

2) 1 Digital version (Google Slides):

  • Same problems as print versions B and C
  • Coloring instructions and link to Google Slides file are in PDF
  • Students use the ‘Fill color’ bucket to color the shapes
  • Questions are not editable (they are in the background) but the shapes and numbers in the pattern ARE movable.

3) Answer keys

4) Two coloring pages with no numbers, for students to color their own way, for fun.

What teachers are saying about these adding and subtracting fractions resource:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"This is a great piece for review and/or fill in work over time. Students can complete a couple of problems over several days when they have time after finishing the daily assignment or it can be the full assignment itself.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"Used this for student work during a sub day and it was perfect! Students were engaged and practicing what we were learning in class!”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”My students enjoyed this as a review of the fifth grade skills especially since they could match and color their answers. They have asked for more practice pages like this.”

Standards

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
